We all have experienced colds and flu that happen during the colder months of the year. Because the two often go together we usually think that cold weather causes more sniffles. But is that really the case? Many people have colds through the summer as well. I believe what is going on does not have a direct relationship to cold weather.
During the summer months we have ready access to fresh vegetables and fruits. We often get more sunshine and exercise as well. There is nothing quite like a summer picnic with a nice slab of watermelon!
During the colder months we tend to eat mostly cooked foods and not a lot of vegetables and fruits. Because of this, our nutrition is not as good during this cold weather and our immune system is more likely to be compromised. Add to this all the sugar that goes with the holidays (starting with Halloween) which decreases your immune system’s ability to fight off infection by 50% for 4-5 hours and you have a recipe for disaster!
So what can you do to stave off those winter sniffles? Keep your immune system at its absolute best. Start now by adding or continuing to eat fresh veggies, especially the dark green ones. You may also consider adding a whole food supplement like Catalyn from Standard Process. Decrease the amount of sugar you consume. Sugar feeds bugs! If you start feeling those sniffles coming on or have others around you that are succumbing to the winter bugs, cut all the sugar out of your diet including the sweet fruits to allow your immune system to function at its absolute best.
You don’t have to rely on drugs or flu shots to fight off the winter bugs if you are feeding your body right. Your body was actually created to fight off infection. You just have to give it what it needs. You really can have fewer sniffles this winter!
thanks dr. call! that's fascinating insight about sugar that i didn't know. :)
